First Baptist Church of South New Berlin was organized in 1799 as the 3rd Baptist Church of Norwich, and opened with 13 members. Originally meeting in local school houses, it was deeded it's current property in 1819 by the village founder, Nathan Taylor. In February of 1856, the wooden structure burnt to the ground. Plans were immediately begun for a new brick building and it was erected in December of the following year.
A revival swept the town in 1871 and attendance swelled to 200. 116 new members were baptized in the months of November and December alone. In 1877, the parsonage was purchased right next door to the church.
By 1927 a Christian Education wing was added to be used for Sunday School and other meetings. It was also used as a school while a new one was erected following a fire. In 1960, this wing was remodeled to provide a second floor fellowship hall and individual classrooms for the growing Sunday School.
By 1968, financial strains led the church to consider a yoked situation. Nearby Gilbertsville was approached and agreed to join. The church building was remodeled in 1973-74. New pews, carpeting and paneling all helped to modernize our appearance. A service of celebration was held in 1974 to rededicate the church to ministry after 175 years of service in the name of Christ.
1989 marked a significant turning point for South New Berlin. A vote was taken and the yoke with Gilbertsville was dissolved. First Baptist South New Berlin stepped out in faith as an independent American Baptist congregation once again. We grew and it was necessary to expand our parking lot, build a playground for children and acquire additional land for a church and community recreation area.
Continued growth, both spiritual and numerical, is important to us. Help in working with our youth is critical and new programming for seniors is considered a new opportunity for us as well.
